    Orange-Vanilla Pound Cake

This pound cake is my take on a family recipe that is a dessert staple for parties. It also is another one of those family recipes that Rob seems to love. I mean, it’s not fancy or anything like that but it is classic and does taste awesome. Traditionally, this would be made in a bundt pan and served as a dessert with icing all over the top. I decided to go for more of a breakfast approach, since Rob wanted it for that. So I actually made it in not one, but TWO different forms! The first was a traditional loaf and the second was muffins! The loaf served…

    Black & White Cheesecake

Cheesecake was the only request Rob’s sister had when her and her fiance over for dinner before they move cross country. They have been the taste testers for all of our cheesecakes so far and this time would be no different. In order to mix it up, I decided to do a chocolate/plain swirl. We had intended to give this a try on our last cheesecake, but we ended up just doing a layered thing. The swirl worked out really well, we may have accidentally made a little too much chocolate. We were also happy to find that there was not any impact of the cooking (if anything it cooked…

    Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake

I think that cheesecake is the perfect dessert for me. Its sweet but not over the top. My favorite cheesecake growing up was one with chocolate and vanilla from Cheesecake Factory. Thankfully for me, Rob has a huge sweet tooth and loves chocolate mousse and cheesecake. So, he was all for this mash-up. I decided to combine a layer of classic vanilla bean cheesecake with a bittersweet chocolate ganache mousse layer. This gives it a combination of both worlds: the soft creaminess of the mousse on top and the firmer richer cheesecake. The bittersweet chocolate provides a good balance for the mouse so that it is not too bitter but…

    Chocolate Mousse Cake

I don’t know why I waited so long to make something like a Chocolate Mousse Cake. Rob will eat just about anything chocolate and I love a light fluffy mousse. On top of all that, this might be one of the easiest desserts to make ever!! Setting aside the crust (which you could just buy), its basically 4 ingredients. This was a no-brainer and makes the perfect date night dessert. The chocolate mix in the cake was a bit of a compromise between me and Rob’s tastes. Rob tends to like chocolate that is at least bitter-sweet (around 60% cocoa). I prefer mine to be a little sweeter in the…

    Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake

I haven’t really baked anything since the holidays and felt the need to get back into it. Since we had a long weekend, I decided to make another cheesecake. This time, I wanted to incorporate a fruit swirl. Raspberry is one of my favorite fruit flavors for dessert. It’s got a great tartness that pairs well with almost anything. Our wedding cake was actually part raspberry flavored. It was raspberry preserve and lemon curd in the layers. Rob actually picked the flavor combo to account for both of our tastes. Rob liked the sweet citrus curd and I liked the tart fruit. I highly recommend this combo for a dessert.…

    Vanilla Bean Cheesecake

As I have previously said, baking is not my primary focus area, but this holiday season I have chosen to really expand my horizons and fill out my skill set.  Thus enters a first for me:  Cheesecake!!  My husband was so excited for this as a good classic cheesecake is one of his favorite desserts.  I decided to change it up a bit by using a chocolate cookie (Oreos) for the crust as opposed to the standard graham cracker.   I will also admit that this exact recipe was a bit of an accident.  While in the process of making the filling, I added the vanilla bean because we ran…

Apple Crumb Cake w/ Bourbon Vanilla Glaze

This Apple Crumb Cake is the perfect fall baked good that can serve as breakfast or dessert, because who doesn’t love cake, apples, and warm spices in the fall.  It has the warmth of a breakfast cake with the sweetness of a dessert, you can eat it any time of day!!   If you can’t tell from my blog, I tend to focus more on cooking than baking.  Generally, I find that baking requires a lot more precision and makes experimenting a bit more difficult.  That is where this recipe comes in, I can really adjust the spice mix and place around with the apple preparation to give it a…
