    Blackberry Ward 8

Rob’s got a new variation on my favorite cocktail of all time: the Whiskey Sour. The whiskey sour is a super versatile cocktail base and there are some classic variations that have become their own classics. The Ward 8 is one such off-shoot that has stood the test of time. It traces its history back to turn-of-the-century Boston, where it takes its name from one of the voting divisions of the city. Its one of those old cocktails that have a number of origin stories surrounding it. Rob loves that kind of cocktail, they are well established, but don’t necessarily have a “right/wrong” recipe. Traditionally, the mixers for the Ward…

    Strawberry-Kiwi Margarita

Rob is back again with another Sunday happy hour cocktail. This time it’s all about a classic fruit combo to make a fresh new marg variation. Strawberry and kiwi are a pretty natural flavor combo; I mean who didn’t grow up drinking some juice drink with that combo? I like that Rob kept a good lime base so that the cocktail wouldn’t end up too sweet. If you have looked at any of the other cocktail posts on the blog, you know I prefer tart to sweet. The overall flavor was really great, slightly sweet and reminiscent of those classic childhood drinks. For margs, I almost always prefer them on…

    Blueberry Vodka Mojito

This cocktail is a throwback to our honeymoon in Maui years ago. We spent a week at the Four Seasons; which was absolute heaven and may still be the best hotel experience we have ever had. One of our favorite parts of the hotel was the swim-up bar at the adult pool area. They had many awesome cocktails, but one of Rob’s favorites was a Blueberry Mojito. It’s not a true “mojito” per se. It doesn’t use rum, which is a perk to me. Rum is just so sugary and with alcohol that doesn’t always create a great mixture. So, its vodka based! If you don’t mind buying it, it…

    The Durrell Cocktail

The Durrells in Corfu is one of Rob and me’s favorite TV shows. Its pretty nerdy as its a PBS period piece comedy, but the show is really solid and has good humor. If you haven’t seen the show check it out, its so good that it actually has been referenced multiple times on Brooklyn 99 (another of our favorite shows)! Rob wanted to make a cocktail that was inspired by the show so thats what he did. Kumquats feature heavily in the show and Rob found them at the store the other day. If you aren’t familiar they are a tiny little citrus fruit that is basically entirely edible.…

    Pomegranate Gin Fizz

With the Memorial Day holiday weekend coming up, its time to start thinking good summery cocktails. Rob’s answer to this was to go with one of his favorites: the Gin Fizz. But with a twist! Gin is one of Rob’s favorite liquors; its got more natural flavor than vodka but isn’t overly sugary like tequila or rum. Rob used a mixture of basil and mint along with fresh pomegranate seeds to make this one. It was really pretty simple, some fresh squeezed lime juice, and the gin, muddle everything up, stir, and top with seltzer. DONE!! It’s super refreshing for something like a cookout or barbecue (which according to Rob…

    Cocktail: Bellini Sour

One of the great things about spring time is the availability of fresh peaches. They pair really well with many classic American flavors for cooking, baking, and drinking. For cocktails, peaches are best known for bellinis. The bellini is classic Sunday brunch favorite; typically made from a peach puree and a sparkling wine. I am personally not a huge fan of champagne or sparkling wine in general. For some reason, they go straight to my head with a buzz and headache. As I have said before, whiskey sours are really my jam. Thankfully, bourbon and peach pair so well with each other. After all, they are both southern US common…

    Masterpiece Cocktail: Pomegranate-Rosemary Whiskey Sour

Whiskey Sours are my absolute favorite cocktail and I have Ina Garten to thank for that. She had a special where she was in Paris and had one at a fancy hotel bar. So, I had Rob, who happens to be an excellent home bartender, make me one and I was hooked. We have made a few variations over the years and the base recipe has served well for experimenting. Its fun posting one of Rob’s cocktail creations on the blog again though. A few years ago when we were first starting off with trying a blog, he had been doing some cocktails for the blog. He did a series…
